Personally, I like ctrl-alt-del to shut down the system in an emergency. I
usually add "-a" to the ctrl-alt-del /etc/inittab entry, and then add a
list of users who are allowed to use ctrl-alt-del from the console, thus
making sure an authorized person is logged in, and it cannot be done if no
one is. The list of authorized users should be put in a file
/etc/shutdown.allow though you should check out 'man shutdown' to make
sure it was compiled for that location. The man page also explains the
options for 'shutdown' so you can alter the /etc/inittab entry to fit your
needs for ctrl-alt-del.
