Hi Christopher,

Welcome to Linux!  I am both a newbie and a lamer, but I believe your
resolution problem may be that your x configuration is wrong.  Using
Mandrake, so if this leads you up the garden path my apologies in
advance. Anyways in Mandrake in either KDE or Gnome desktops opening the
menu and clicking 
Configuration  ->  Configure your computer then logging on as root will
bring you to a place where your can change the resolution.If 1024 x 768
is not available, configure your monitor will let you add that option.  

Your modem issue will need to wait until someone else can answer.
