Problem When Generating Secret for Digest Authentication...

Every few weeks one of my RedHat 8.0 servers encounters the following
problem (Notice the dates): 
 
[Sun Jul 04 04:02:32 2004] [notice] Digest: generating secret for
digest authentication ...
[Tue Jul 06 09:33:48 2004] [notice] Digest: done

Apache hangs during the time when it's "generating secret for digest
authentication". With Apache being hung (and only creating one pid upon
restart), this causes timeouts for people trying to view webpages. When
I try restarting httpd, the error remains, and the only way I can solve
this problem is to reboot the server. 
 
Has anyone encountered this or does anyone know a fix for this problem?
