CCNA/CCNP

Josh,
CCNA is good for three years, you either can take a new CCNA exam to renew or like right now my current CCNA is set to expire in May. I can either retake the new CCNA exam, the ICND CCNA exam, or any 642-XXX exam to renew my CCNA for the length of the exam you take. Honestly CCNA has never really done anything to help me advance anywhere so all I even took for my CCNP exams was the switching exam.
MY OPINION on the CCNP stuff is don't take it unless you are in a Campus/ISP, or large network environment. Your CCNA, and some good basic routing experience should be enough to get in entry level to where you may want to go. CCNP is a waste if you aren't working in the environment it is training you for. Without the hands on doing the things day to day in the CCNP line it is going to fade away in your memory. Doing just Router RIP, or OSPF from time to time isn't enough :). Basically that is way I stopped continuing my CCNP. I have three routers left with 1 static route on each going out managed VPN lines through Quest. I have one 2950 switch here in my rack running 2 VLANS. I just put in a 2621XM that is running the Easy VPN server, and I am replacing the managed VPN line with Business Cable and Cisco 831 broadband routers running Easy VPN Client. So all my 2500's will be mothballed pretty soon. So continuing on with my CCNP seemed like all it would make me is a paper tec
 h for it.
Some people like having as many letters after their name on their Card, but I try to keep my certs to my level of hands on experience. One of my old co-workers is a network engineer at adelphia, and had to take a hands on lab to even get the job. So if he was CCNX, and was a paper tech he would of never made it to the final interview.
Also the CCNA is not too hard, just know you subnetting, and accesslist cold. Rest of the stuff is pretty basic if you have a router to play on, or a sim.
   Carl
