Make sure resolutions greater than 640x480 are supported. Do a dmesg |more to see if everything is recognized properly.
Run ifconfig and bind an address to the nic. Take some headphones to make sure the audio works.
Nothing else comes to mind right away, but I'm sure more suggestions will follow.

Subject: Using a LiveCD to test a notebook
Hi. Maybe there isn't a generic answer to this, but can someone give
some pointers on what to look for when checking out a new notebook with
a cd like knoppix at a computer store, etc. ? I know about checking on
the web first for notebooks (www.linux-on-laptops.com).
Obviously, it has to boot and bring up kde, but do any of you have a
checklist of things to try?
