While I'm not sure of the cause of your problem, you might save yourself a
lot of pain by installing apt for RedHat (assuming it's RedHat).
You can find it here:
http://apt.freshrpms.net
Then you'd run something along these lines:
apt-get install mplayer
And watch (most likely in awe) as it automagically fetches all those
dependecies for you.
FYI - apt originates from Debian GNU/Linux - to spare yourself dependency
hell, I'd suggest just running Debian instead, but I realize that may be a
*little* bit extreme of a solution for the situation...
