www.mozilla.org for more accurate details
My explanation is...
Mozilla Firebird was originally the "Phoenix" project. Which was a web
browser project that used similar rendering technology(the gecko engine)
as Mozilla does, however with a emphasis on making a very fast lean web
browser. Phoenix did not include newsgroup or email capabilities. The
GUI may also be slightly different.
At some point, the Mozilla guys apparently decided to use Phoenix as
their new base of development. When this occured, Phoenix became
"Mozilla Firebird". Still no news or mail capabilities.
It's a nice lean web browser. However, it is still at a pre 1.0
release(0.6.1).
