Mandrake login problem

I always drop to Term 1 (alt-Ctrl-F1)
THen I log in as root and do a telinit 3 then I'm sure the GUI is not running.
Then I fix gui and can g back and forth from telinint 5 to toelinit 3 to stop
and start windowing services.
Even after installing and uninstalling I ususally do not have to reboot! That
to me is the really big thing...
