Sounds like a firewall issue. If you want a good
firewall that's fairly easy to configure, try
guarddog. it runs on iptables and it's
graphical. check it out here ->

you'll have to run it as root
they have a nice walk thru there
there are many more firewalls also ( linux IS about
choice ) so check others out @freshmeat.net if you
like.
