Sound, WTF?

Okay. I fixed the problem w/ the creation of /dev/dsp
as a directory
gleaned from syslog: 
Jun  6 14:02:21 GOLEM devfsd[114]: read config file:
"/etc/devfsd.conf"
Jun  6 14:07:11 GOLEM devfsd[114]: error copying:
"/dev/dsp" to "/lib/dev-state/dsp"
( i knew it was that damned devfsd !!! )
removed lib/dev-state/dsp and left
/lib/dev-state/sound/dsp 
and bada bing no change after reboot. 

Rob, tried that command to no avail, 
it refuses to keep the settings. When I cat the file
 /etc/asound.state all the settings appear to be 
correct. I think that it isn't loading. Is it supposed
to load as part of the alsa module?
