newbie redhat update problem

Well, if the problem that you're having has to do with things taking a long
time to start up under the GUI, the solution is to make sure that you've
named your machine and then put it's name in /etc/hosts like this:

127.0.0.1 myhostname localhost localhost.localdomain

The problem is that the machine has absolutely no way to locate the
name of the machine using DNS 'cuz you have no network connection and you
have to wait for the DNS timeout before it figures this out. Unfortunatly,
this occurs with EVERY application that tries to connect to the display.

Make sure your machine has a simple hostname like 'fred', rather than a
fully qualified domainname like 'fred.somestuff.adelphia.net'. You can fix
this in /etc/sysconfig/network in the 'HOSTNAME' field. You can find out
what the machine thinks it's hostname is with the 'hostname' command.

Hope this helps...

Cheers!
