Newbie with 2 Questions

Simple way of doing it:

open a term (an xterm or konsole or whatever)
at the prompt type:  rpm --rebuilddb
wait until the prompt returns

For a more thorough description type:   man rpm
It will give you more information than you can digest in one sitting.
