I re-did my dual boot machine with Fedora Core 1.

I like it. I wouldn't call it a big upgrade if you had Redhat 9 and you
were watching updates for individual packages closely.

A few observations...

1) There appears to be some old standard library not included with it.
This affected installation of Macromedia's Flash plugin/player.

Think I installed one rpm and everything was fine. Do a search(in
Google) on Fedora and Flash if you need the solution. The answer is
there.

2) "yum" comes with it. I've never used this before. I don't even know
if it was in Redhat 9. It's similiar to Debian's "apt-get" I guess.

I've used it now, and it seems cool.

There is also "apt-get" available for Fedora if you want it, but I
haven't installed it.

3) I got a noticeable speed upgrade(in games). I do NOT believe it's
because of Fedora. I'm usually really good at making sure my video card
drivers are up to date. But, I believe I missed a upgrade to nvidia's
linux drivers(1.0-4496). I was using (1.0-4363).

I'm sure it's the new driver. If so, any of you running the old one will
likely want to check it out.

I am now getting what appears to be identical performance in OpenGL
games as I do in Windows. Traditionally, Linux has lagged behind because
there has been MUCH more effort to optimize Windows drivers. Looks like
that is changing, woo!

I haven't run benchmarks, but I bet its real close now. Primarily, I use
"Enemy Territory" as my judge. I have it installed in XP, and Fedora.

******************************

I came across a suggestion(think it was in nvidia's documentation) for
removing the old Mesa libraries on your system before you install the
new driver. As the new driver, apparently comes with its own and this
lessens the possibility of the wrong library being used.

*shrug*

I removed it before I installed the new driver. I don't know if mattered
though.

4) I had a question for the list, right when the list went dead, heh.
Now, I can't remember it. :) Augh.
