iptables

trying to set the default policy on the input chain to
drop in RH9 
 tried  iptables -P INPUT DROP
        iptables -P INPUT -j DROP

gives an errors in relation to the "-p INPUT"
  like bad argument, built in chain

will allow me to add rules but won't allo me to set
default policy.....any ideas
