zip drive errors

Hello Mike,
Those commands, fdisk, cfdisk, etc. are commands that require you to
be root or have root privileges, however, you do not need to be root to
just access the drive or drive's media later, unless it has been setup
that way (in the /etc/fstab file). Can you look in your
/var/log/messages file and see what designation the zip drive has? i.e.
hd? or sd?

Yes, I was both logged in as root and a disk was in the drive.
Which reminds me of another question, " how come I am denied access
to certain drives and - or - files if I was logged in as root. I'm
supposed to have superuser status, right? I noticed this while just
tinkering around a few days ago.

    Thanks,

    Mike

did you have the disk in the drive when you were trying those
commands? were you logged in as root?

Hi all, I had a little time so I tried cfdisk
/dev/hdd, cfdisk /dev/hdd4, cfdisk /dev/scd0, all of which
got me a fatal error, press any key to return, and fdisk
/dev/hdd, fdisk /dev/scd0 etc. etc. which resulted in unable
to open disk. I don't have time right now to go into my boot
config. file, I'm hoping to get to that tomorrow . Might I
be doing something the wrong way?

            Thank you,
            Mike

also to use /dev/scd0, check to see if you have
something like hdd=ide-scsi in your boot config, check
your /etc/lilo.conf file, I add that all the time, then
tell whatever my ide cd-rom drive is, that it is
/dev/scd0, this is a nice workaround as Linux seems to
work much better with scsi emulation and the supermount
command lines in /etc/fstab don't have a problem with
xmms then, it is a pretty neat little work around

yeah use a blank disk, or even put one in with stuff on it. Try ding a fdisk
/dev/hdd and see if you can see the partitions on them. If it's been used in
windows you should be able to see the partitions, maybe it's not on 4...
