It is the version that comes with Mandrake 8.2, OpenSSH_3.1p1, SSH
protocols 1.5/2.0, OpenSSL 0x0090603f. I don't know what version the scp
is (if it would be different from the ssh version that is) but the man
page on scp is dated 9/25/99. How does one fluidly work with this if it
is not used in conjunction with ssh? Aside from the obvious use of a
seperate terminal window logged in with ssh to see the files to
transfer/locations, etc.

That seems odd. I've done scp between machines before while in a
ssh session without incurring the I/O error. What version of ssh are you
using? Or perhaps a better question.... is it openssh, or some other variant?
