Framebuffer in redhat 8.0

Does anybody know how to enable framebuffer support in redhat 8.0??
I have an ATI Rage IIC

it looks like it should already be compiled in, and i added:
video=atyfb:mode:800x600,font:SUN12x22

in the kernel arguments in the grub.conf file,

but when i try to run mplayer with the frambuffer, it says:

fbdev: Can't open /dev/fb0: No such device

so i'm assuming that it's not really working..how can i at least check if
the framebuffer is working?
