Installing linux

Last night I was trying to install caldera 2.3 and
mandrake 8.1.. neither would complete.... caldera 
would get right up the end but never complete.
Mandrake aborted in the being give me the error
X:10 fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on
the X server ":O.O" aftere 58 requests (54 known
processed ) with 0 events. GDk - Error X| :X
connection to :0.0 broken

I am able to install win 98 with no problem

any ideas
