What version of XF86 are you using? The vidmode extension is what a lot of
programs that try to do realtime video use. I originally had a problem with
most of the video players 'cuz I didn't have vidmode extensions.

Typing 'xdpyinfo -ext XFree86-VidModeExtension' should give you something that
looks like this at the bottom:

XFree86-VidModeExtension version 2.1 opcode: 135, base error: 131
  Monitor Information:
    Vendor: Unknown, Model: Unknown
Num hsync: 1, Num vsync: 1
    hsync range 0: 30.00 - 70.00
    vsync range 0: 50.00 - 160.00
  Available Video Mode Settings:
Clock Hdsp Hbeg Hend Httl Vdsp Vbeg Vend Vttl Flags
    108.00 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync
     94.50 1024 1072 1168 1376 768 769 772 808 +hsync +vsync
     56.30 800 832 896 1048 600 601 604 631 +hsync +vsync
     36.00 640 696 752 832 480 481 484 509 -hsync -vsync
  Current Video Mode Setting:
    108.00 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync

If you don't get this at the bottom... you go hungry BOW, BOW, BOW....
(wondering if anyone will recognize the reference...).

Cheers!

Bob
