Linux Kernel 2.4.16 "make dep" error

gcc -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -o scripts/mkdep
scripts/mkdep.c

according to this the dep starts off with 2 calls to the scripts
directory.  I would make sure that these 2 files exist.  Make sure you're
in the right directory, etc.

At what point does it fail?  Can you supply some of the output?
