I phrased that badly.  After you've updated the source tree you can do:

  cd /usr/src
  make buildworld >& world.log; make buildkernel >& kernel.log &

and go do other stuff while the entire build takes place.  So it's not
like *you* are engaged for the entire "wall clock time" of the update
either...
