What are the chances that there is a duplicate mac address? I had that 
once and drove me nuts until I figured it out. Doing an nmap search on 
your ip block(s) should expose the problem if it is there. As root run, 
e.g. "nmap 192.168.1.*" and that should show all the ip's of the 
machines on the block as well as the mac addresses.
