[nflug] Getting my old Windows MBR back on my dual boot notebook

I just read an article about installing Linux and grub without trashing
the windows mbr (as I did when I installed over a year ago).

http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/2006/05/08/dual-boot-laptop.html?page=3

When I did the install, something (I'm guessing it was in the MBR)
killed my two fancy buttons for quick launch of DVD and Quicktime
players. These buttons no longer work even under XP (dual boot) and
don't even show up as key presses under Linux (with xev).

My computer comes with a restore partition, etc. and no software CD's
(although I have some backup CD's I made somewhere).

Is there any way to get the MBR and whatever else was destroyed back
without doing a windows restore which will almost certainly wipe out all
of Linux and all of my windows customizations and additional
applications installs while putting back all sorts of junk I had to
manually delete?

TIA

Joe
