I've read their reasoning, and I understand the points they make.  I
don't violently disagree with all of them, but I do dislike it, personally.

If that's how they want to set up their distro, fine.  But I found it 
to be just one more irritating idiosyncracy that has led me to use
Ubuntu very seldom.  In fact, I think last week I installed something
else to test/play with in the partition where  Edgy used to be because I
never booted into it after the first couple times.
