  Download the system rescue cd from http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page
It's gentoo based and I love it for checking out hardware because it has
an app on it called aida. At the prompt, run aida and it will scan your
hardware, including the monitor (can be used for laptops too). It will
tell you ALL sorts about your monitor, including, max resolution,
frequency rates, aspect ratio and at what refresh rate the monitor will
use at what resolution setting. Very good info to have to totally tweak
your X or whatever else on your system!
