You're right to assume that upgrading rather than clean installs doesn't 
work well, at least with Fedora.  I should know.

I googled a site which, if not organized as well as it should be, was 
pretty thorough.  I don't remember the exact site nor exact details. 
But there are general guidelines that you should follow before running yum:
1.	install the latest kernel
2.	install the latest yum
3.	rpm fedora-release of the FC you are trying to upgrade to.
Keep in mind that this is intended for FC 3 and newer.

I was able to upgrade from 3 to 4 by doing this, but borked the process 
from 4 to 5 mid-yum.  Rebooting was futile.  Know what you are in for.

apt-get is available for FC.  I've installed it but haven't played 
around with it enough to know if it's of practical use.  I used yum to 
install it, and the package is called apt.  I think it installs a few 
more rpms to satisfy dependencies.
