Edit the file /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules (on Fedora, probably 
different on Debian) but do a man on udev, then it should show you the 
relevant path/file but it's most likely in your *.rules file. You can 
assign perms and ownerships in there. I would assign a group and make 
sure you and your wife are part of the group. I would also tell Gnome 
NOT to auto mount removable media, etc..
