[nflug] Verizon DSL

I am a former Adelphia HSI internet customer that did the exact same thing that
you are contemplating. My cable bill was about $120+, and I was not happy with
the level of service I was getting with the cable modem.

I was lucky enough to be living in one of the areas that supports 3.0Mb service,
so I signed up, and bundled service with DirecTV and Verizon for telephone -
this gives me about $8 per month per service savings.

To setup my Verizon DSL, all I did was walk through the connection process on
their CDROM on a Windows box. After doing this, I reconnected my Linux based
firewall (RH 9, dual NIC, running MonMotha IPTABLES script heavily modified by
myself), and all is well. I also have had bad experiences with Verizon's DNS
services, so I setup a resolving/caching BIND server, as well as a squid based
proxy with Dansguardian content filtering.

The result is that I have a very fast shared connection, which is further
improved by DNS and HTTP/S caching, and is also setup to protect my kids from
inadvertantly getting in trouble (I've heard there are some adult sites on the
internet).

HTH,
Kyle
