When people make statements to the effect of
"Microsoft is a big target, that is why hackers find
so many security holes" I not only find amusing but I
interpret as all the more reason to avoid MS products
while striving for HIPAA compliance. I hate to sound
like my Mother, but "If everyone was jumping off a
bridge, would you jump too?" Think of it this way,
does putting your customers in front of that MS target
when better alternatives exist meet this criteria?
"You have to be able to show that, within your
environment, you did the best you could to maintain
the security and privacy of the data you hold." With
any client I first investigate the feasibility of the
client's app running on Linux. If that fails and the
Windows OS is required, I will use the IE icon (called
firefox)but link it to firefox the user never knows.
If the alternative is better and its compliant the
users should be forced to learn wht their job requires
to do the work even if its a new OS. Just because some
IT guy that has a blue coller attitude and uses
Windows only his job too is to learn new tech and and
implement it.

As far as HIPPA compliance on ANY windows box, I don't
see how this is
possible! One quick read of the EULA for windows
should show glaring
problems like.....

* Consent to Use of Data.? You agree that Microsoft
and its

????? affiliates may collect and use technical
information

????? gathered in any manner as part of the product
support

????? services provided to you, if any, related to the
Product.

????? Microsoft may use this information solely to
improve

????? our products or to provide customized services
or

????? technologies to you.? Microsoft may disclose
this

????? information to others, but not in a form that
personally

????? identifies you.??

I would think that technically the HIPPA rules would
have a problem
with
this but they look the other way of course for windows.
