"simplistic ldap" is an oxymoron :)

but don't let me discourage you, ldap is where you should go moving to
in IMHO. i'm at the final stage of a NIS+ to LDAP migration with
password sync with AD and you don't just "pick it up", i've been working
on this project for nearly 9 months.

could you be a little more specific when you say that you want to use it
for samba and other server/apps? if i knew more specifically what your
intention are i might be able to provide you with something. feel free
to contact me off list is necessary.
