have you tried different media?  just to be sure you don't have a bad
stack. (last year I bought a stack of 50, 37 of 50 wouldn't reliably
burn, say no to no-name discs)

cdrcord -v -data -speed=12 -dev=ATA:0,0,0 -tas ISO_IMAGE  should burn
OK. of course replacing ISO_IMAGE with your disc image, .cu

if your drive has burnproof/burnfree, add "-driveropts=burnproof" to
the above line.

K3b is also a nice friendly gui for CDburning/authoring..
