Drives fail way more than controllers. Sounds like the drive is 
beginning to fail, I would not keep playing with it or you may loose 
your data when it decides to not fire up at all anymore. If you can get 
it to boot, boot into single mode Linux (just to keep the demand on it 
low) and see if the system is bitching about it, dmesg should say 
something if it's an hdd problem. Then if you see problems, get another 
drive and mirror it before it's too late.
