for a hardware compabiliity database. You should definetley look through 
there before making any decision.

As another poster responded, I too would highly recommend a hardware mpeg 
encoder card, especially if you have a slower CPU (the Hauppauge PVR-250 
is extremely popular). But if you'd just like to get your hands a little 
dirty with video4linux, I have a Aver Media TV Studio card with remote 
that does software encoding and works in Linux. Contact me off-list with a 
resonable offer if you're interested in it.
