ssh hang issue(solved but now explain this..)

The root user (the one we use to do the ssh/automated log rotation
stuff) is not in the directory- only local.

That's correct, but remember ssh logs in as and checks the user/pass so
it'll
contact the ldap server for those if it can't find them in
/etc/{passwd,shadow}
and if the ldap server is configured for reverse dns lookups and the
requesting
machine isn't resolvable in reverse DNS it can cause the ldap server to
time
out in giving a response to the machine that made the request.
