Portmap doesn't start in FC3

Portmap is the daemon used to map RPC ports for RPC based services like NFSS
and NIS.    Odds are portmap need to be reinstalled.  rpm -qfi /sbin/portmap
should tell you the name of the package.  Run "apt-get remove portmap" and
"apt-get install portmap" and it should fix it.
