Where are you seeing this - within the graphical environment (if so, which desktop environment are you using?) or on the console? 

If on the console, providing the output of 'env' and 'set' would be helpful. It may be copious though, so you may want to put it somewhere other than in your reply to the list. Feel free to send it directly to me failing anything else.
