Knoppix HW detction is fantastic.
The spurious IRQ means it knows there's a device there, but nothing
talks to it.
Plug in to the sound output jack for your onboard sound and see if you
have sound there.
The AC 97 codec stuff has to do with onboard processing [which is a
fascist plot with Intel and Microsoft, but that's another subject].
I have on board sound and modem [had] and when I got a real modem, I had
to go into the BIOS and disable the onboard software modem in order for
the hardware modem to work.
You may have to do something similar.
Or you may just need to just change your default sound IRQ from 7 to 5,
which I've no idea how to do, but it's probably as simple as changing a
line or two in a file or two.
