Introducing myself

Actually, I'll go ahead and setup iax for external communications..

For internal communications, I'll need 2 ip addresses, one for the SIP
adapter, and one for the actual box.

This way I can get around any networking issues using iax, but
internally it'll be SIP, so that I can show how the majority of the real
world uses voip..

(if this is even the topic that people want)

So the general voip connections will be:

Analog Phone <----> ATA Device <---> Asterisk <-(internet)---> IAX
Server on the net <----> VOIP Provider <----> PSTN

Let me know if this is what people want. I need to spend the next couple
of days setting it up. I don't want to waste my time if people are not
interested.

Wow- Where to begin....

1- IP masquerading != firewall
2- If all you have is a nat box of some type it should be trivial to
open a port to allow an IP behind the nat the required communication
without having any impact on the windows systems and servers behind it.
3- Even if a legitimate stateful firewall is in place, it's still
trivial to edit the ruleset to allow the required communication without
disrupting anything else.
4- Asterisk can't just 'initiate' a communication with the internet. If
it's an IP Telephony demo that people want to see, then how would
inbound calls come in? The pstn/voip gateway needs a real routable IP
address to call.

Well, we really can't make the firewall go away. Something about
windows boxes
on the network and the need to be able to firewall the servers that are
out
there.

Sorry, can't do much about that. Why is it that Asterisk won't work
through a
firewall? Can't the initiator set up a bi-directional connection
without
having to be able to connect back on a return channel? Most firewalls
block
initiators and just about everyone out there that has any kind of client
machine will be masqueraded behind some kind of firewall. I find it
hard to
believe that asterisk is written such that it can't work in a standard
environment.

Cheers!
