New Linux Handhelds

I don't follow /.  , etc., so you may already know of these.

Apparently, there is an explosion of Linux-based handheld computers
aimed at lessening the digital divide.  Check these out!

One really neat feature, if it really works, is an accelerometer built
in to the amida.  They use it to turn hand gestures (holding the unit)
into user input.

This particular effort is India-centric, but with the open hardware and
software designs, that should not be very hard to change.

The model appears to cost around $200, still not really cheap, but it
looks like it's real strengths are in the easy user interface and the
smart card access for sharing.

Of course, many people have reservations about smart cards in general,
but with some strong encryption, maybe some of those objections could be
overcome.
