Trying to get Mandrake to use my winmodem

That shouldn't be a problem then. Next you have to find whether it is an
"hsf" or "hcf" modem. You can usually decipher this by the numbers on
the chipset/model number, etc. Most are hsf modems. You can then go to
http://www.linuxant.com and download the latest rpm for it, whether hsf
or hcf. Then run the rpm as root. It will even make the correct symlink
to the device and call it /dev/modem. It will place the correct calls
into your /etc/modules.conf file too. You can then use kppp to query the
modem and you should be good to go.
