Don't forget ext3.  It's even backward compatible with ext2.  So you can
mount the filesystem as ext3 or ext2.  When you remount as ext3, it will
scan the HD & update the journal accordingly.  This also means you don't
have to wipe & rewrite an existing ext2 partition.
